About WQED
WQED Multimedia is an iconic public media institution—one of America’s original educational broadcasters. Today, we reach hundreds of thousands of neighbors across southwestern Pennsylvania through five broadcast television channels, streaming platforms, 24/7 classical radio, and education and community engagement programs.
This is a moment of real transformation. With major shifts in media consumption, the launch of new digital products like WQED+, the elimination of our federal funding, and growing demand for trusted, hopeful, local storytelling, WQED is evolving from a traditional broadcaster into a multi-platform community resource.
Joining WQED now means helping shape how Pittsburgh connects through story, culture, and shared experiences—on air, online, and in person.
The Role
WQED is looking for a Content Promotion Strategist to serve as the voice of the viewer and turn great PBS programming into moments people discover, talk about, and show up for — online and in real life.
You’ll activate audiences by combining your instinct, data, and genuine love of PBS storytelling to shape how content is surfaced, promoted, and brought into community.
You’ll help ensure that when the next Ken Burns film, Masterpiece drama, or science series premieres, it is wildly anticipated, watched heavily and connects viewers in conversation.

- Track the PBS pipeline and identify high-potential premieres early.
- Develop promotional angles and audience targets based on past trends.
- Identify opportunities for hype moments, countdowns, and cross-channel amplification.
- Shape positioning, messaging, and campaign timing, and collaborate with fellow marketing team members and cross-functional colleagues to bring to life.
WQED+ App Curation with Promotional Strategy
- Plan hero carousel strategy and featured collections in collaboration with the production team.
- Create fresh collection concepts and develop recurring, promotable themes.
- Test positioning, sequencing, and promotional framing to increase streams and completion.
- Balance national PBS tentpoles with Pittsburgh originals.
Programming-Led Email & Digital Promotion
- Own the weekly “What to Watch” email.
- Launch dedicated promotional sends for major premieres.
- Segment by genre interest (drama, nature, history) and viewing behaviors.
- Use performance data to refine subject lines, positioning, and send timing.
Build Genre-Based Communities — Online and In Person
- Cultivate digital communities around:
- Drama
- Science/Nature
- History
- Other interest areas that you identify
- Pilot watch prompts, polls, discussion moments and other interactive engagement tactics.
- Collaborate with the Events Manager to:
- Create genre-based meetups
- Host screenings
- Turn streaming passion into real-world connection
Turn Insights into Growth
- Monitor streaming trends, genre flow, and drop-off patterns.
- Identify opportunities to:
- Increase app usage
- Strengthen member retention
- Support higher-tier giving

You’ll Thrive If You…
- Love PBS programming and have strong opinions about it.
- Get excited about tentpoles and how to build momentum around them.
- Have a knack for building communities.
- Are energized by experimentation and testing.
- Believe trusted, hopeful storytelling deserves strong promotion.
Required Application Materials
Cover letter required. Please address the following three prompts:
- Tell us what interests you about PBS programming.
